NEW VENUE FOR DISCO DOWN

without comments

Following the demise of The Red Rooms another of Tyneside’s finest indie nights has been forced to find a new home. From December 4, Disco Down will be making Northumbria University its new permanent residence.

“Named in homage to one of the most definitive 90’s bands, Shed Seven, Disco Down has one mission: to celebrate the forgotten music of your youth and introduce it to those that were too young to remember. The night has been created by people that love the music and want to share it with likeminded people wanting to hear bands like Oasis, Suede, The Bluetones and Supergrass whose once godlike genius status seem to have been forgotten in recent days.

Bands you’ll still find yourself getting your groove on to include Shed Seven, Bluetones, Oasis, Suede, Mansun, Beck, The Libertines, Stone Roses, Kasabian, Small Faces, Primal Scream, Muse, The Music, B.R.M.C, The Smiths, NewOrder, Prodigy, Manics, Supergrass, Cast, The Beatles, Stereophonics, Chemical Brothers, The Shamen, Ride, The Sound, Happy Mondays, The Charlatans.”

If you can’t wait til then they’re doing a guest DJ Set at The End Bar on November 6 alongside Gallagher brothers tribute act Noasis and local band Ten Ton Toys.

REVENGE AT THE END THIS FRIDAY

without comments

Last month’s Revenge at The Northumberland Arms was a riotous, anything-goes rock ‘n’ roll party (from what I can remember, anyway). Expect more of the same this Friday as Shaft and the guys relocate to The End for their new bi-monthly residency. There’s even live music from The Mojitos and My Lost Youth if you get there early enough.

REVENGE DJ COMPETITION

without comments

Fancy yourself as a bit of a Zane Lowe or John Peel? Then this competition from the good folk at Revenge should be right up your street. To celebrate their relaunch as a monthly night switching between The Northumberland Arms and The End, Tyneside’s finest ‘anything goes’ indie night is offering one lucky punter the chance get behind the decks for their very own five song set:

“Right, we have a new feature for you wonderful Revenge types. Each Revenge event we have we’ll be reserving the midnight slot for one of you lovely people who’ll be a guest DJ on the night and that slot is The Revenge 5. It’s open to anyone and all you have to do is send in the five tunes you would play if you were given the opportunity. We’ll look at them all and the ones that we think most match the Revenge ethos will be selected to come and play those very tunes. Easy as that. And don’t worry if you’ve never DJ’d before it’s easy – if I can do it, you can do it. It’s the mixing and beat matching that’s hard and you won’t be doing anything like that. So send in your five selections and keep your fingers crossed.”

Get in touch with the guys via Facebook or MySpace if you’re up for it.

A reminder that celebrated Swedish pop-infused indie night Popklubb returns to Retreat at St Dominic’s for the autumn, kicking off this Saturday (September 12). Get there early to catch guest DJs Jonny and Skippa work their magic at 9.30. Should be a good ‘un!

Popklubb will also welcome back their John Peel Special in October to celebrate John Peel Week, with a bias towards all those tunes that the great man introduced to the world via his legendary Peel Sessions.

Popklubb have also joined forces with Ex-Libris and Portion for Foxes to put on The Wave Pictures at The Star & Shadow Cinema on October 16. Expect it to be a great gig from a band well known for their stunning live performances. If that’s not enough, they’ll be supported by ex-Herman Dune man Stanley Brinks.
