A few weeks ago I had the good fortune to see incandescent Brighton rockers Bad For Lazarus supporting Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster at The Cluny. Fronted by former Matchbox, Nine Inch Nails and UNKLE guitarist Rich Fownes, the band unleash their white-hot debut single “Old Rats on a New Ship” today as a free download. Grab it here:

A well-rounded barrage of poppy post-punk, the latest set of tracks from Boro-based outfit Jimmy & The Sounds looks set to firmly establish the four-piece among the North East’s rising stars for 2010. Scratch below the occasional Maximo Park and Little Comets references and you’ll find a band with an enviable knack for writing the kind of hook-laden indie that major-label A&Rs adore.

Channelling the spirits of UK fuzz legends The Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine, New York-based four-piece The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart released arguably the finest album of the year with their eponymous vintage indie-infused debut. The band’s follow-up EP, Higher Than The Stars, delivers more of the same, fusing catchy girl-group melodies, razor-sharp distortion and echo-drenched vocals to startling effect.
